Note that after the 2023 floods, and the severe damage in the infastructure there are no trains to Volos, but there is a connecting bus service from Larisa train station. You can get a train from Athens or Thessaloniki to Larisa, but the services (and connections) are no longer frequent. From the Athens Airport you can get either a local train service or the Underground (Metro) to Stathmos Larissis. Please don't mix them up: Stathmos Larissis is the main train station in Athens and not the station of the city of Larisa! From Thessaloniki airport you may use the 1Χ/1Ν bus to go to Neos Sidiridromikos Stathmos (New Train Station).
Airports
If you live in the Balkans, driving to Volos is easy, but most of you will depend on airline service. There are four airports than can serve you on your way to Volos.
Nea Aghialos
The military airfield in Nea Aghialos services a few direct flights (mostly charters). Destinations for 2025 were: Munich, Dusseldorf, Paris, Vienna and Brno, once a week. The airterminal is 26km from Volos and there is a bus service only for each flight. Taxi cost from airport to the town is approx. €45.
Athens
Athens is the obvious choice. There are many flights each day from all major airports, as it services over 150 international destinations. After reaching the airport, you should get the shuttle bus X93 to the Liossion Bus Terminal where you can get on the KTEL bus for Volos. Shuttle buses run every 30-40 minutes. KTEL services are currently 8 per day.
Another option, that saves a lot of time, especially if you travel in group is to pre-book a taxi that will take you straight to Volos.
Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is an alternative choice, as it is closer than Athens and the airport serves over 70 destinations. After reaching the airport, you should get the shuttle bus 1Χ/1Ν to the Makedonia Bus Terminal where you can get on the KTEL bus for Volos. The local bus runs approximately every 30 minutes. KTEL services are currently 7 per day.
Skiathos
The small airport in Skiathos served 22 European destinations this year, with rather frequent flights, as the island a major tourist spot. The airport is popular to plane spotters, as you can see from the photo. You can take a taxi from the airport an be in the port within 10 minutes; then take the ferry to Volos. It takes about 2 hours, but you should check the ferry timetables, because the service is not very frequent (usually 3 on weekdays and 4 on weekends) and in high season it usually runs late).
Accommodation
Many new hotels have opened in Volos in the past few years and some older ones renovated, as the town is becoming more popular, especially as a weekend destination for Greeks. Our partner Four Ways Travel has secured rooms in both 3 and 4 star hotels in the city at a reduced price for the conference attendants.
